Things came together quickly and I moved to Portland June 18th! I have been busy with getting school started but can now start sticking my nose out of its little corner!
Well, there is Southpark Square. Its an older building, but they just redid the inside. Its right on the South Park Blocks. I looked at it before I found this one. Its pretty nice. The studio I looked at there was under $800/month, but it was very tiny - about half the size of my current one. The Vue is cheap - not my style, but it seems to work well for the younger students. Its quite old. Depending on your finances, you might want to look up "roommate wanted" postings on Craigslist.
There are tons of apartments, but downtown might be out of your price range. I would suggest going to apartment listings on Craigslist and putting in the money you can spend and where in Portland you want to live and see what comes up. There are always tons of listings.
Its quite safe. I mean, there is a Catholic Student center across the street where the homeless go for food, but they never bother anyone. The people here are so nice and its only 1.5 blocks to the Streetcar in either direction. Plus in September, the metro will be accessible from 1-2 blocks away.
I moved downtown, just a couple blocks from the PSU campus. Depending on where you need to be, there are some good and some dreadful apartment buildings down here. I am living at a brand new building called Cyan. Love it!
