This Week in Portland December 27 2008 - January 3 2009

I hope you all had a great holiday despite the travel dangers the Portland weather imposed upon many of you. We certainly had a white Christmas! Not only that, but we broke records for how much snow we got in and around the Portland area. Its still surreal to me; nearly two feet of snow in some places! Any Portlander knows it’s a near miracle when it snows and sticks for more than an afternoon and well, tomorrow (Sunday) will mark two weeks since the white stuff began to fall from the sky and… Continue

Portland Oregon's Best Pilates Studio

All my life I'd been clumsy, but very active. After developing a rare, untreatable, extremely painful spinal condition in 2000, (adhereing arachnoiditis) I grew even more clumsy. My left leg, which also suffered nerve damage, was significantly smaller than the other, due to atrophy. I couldn't move my ankle back and forth, nor could I complete simply ankle circles or toe lifts. Entire sets of muscles were unable to fire due to the disease and disuse. I had been unable to exercise at all due to… Continue

This Week in Portland December 20-December 27

Dear Portland, oh lovely and shockingly White Portland!

We are going on nearly a week of cold weather and snow pretty much every day! This weather is so uncommon for Portland, I'm actually a little shocked that it has last so long and just seems to keep coming. As I sit here in North Portland and glance out my window around 9:30 Saturday morning, I see a scene straight out of the Midwest! Snow everywhere and more snow coming down! Personally, I love snow. Its one of those energizing,… Continue

Civil Rights Square

Hello neighbors! Has anyone noticed that we have an intersection of streets named for Civil Rights legends Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, but there isn't anything special marking or commemorating this intersection? I for one would love to see something special there, but I wouldn't presume to decide what- perhaps a plaque, mural, sculpture, series of art pieces? Something else? Perhaps something specific to these two, perhaps something regarding the concept of Civil Rights in many… Continue

We started the Portland social network side of the website several months ago, and it's quickly become the most fun part of the site, because of all the wonderful people on here! I truly enjoy answering questions, providing Portland advice, and sharing…

This Week in Portland, December 6-13, 2008

Hello, Portland! I hope everyone is enjoying the hustle and bustle of the holidays--I've noticed that there are lights and Christmas trees up everywhere, although I haven't had time to do any holiday decorating myself! It's not that I feel like Scrooge this year, because I am grateful for many things (like living in Portland) and I actually enjoy celebrating the holidays-- I am just too busy! Maybe next weekend I will get around to it. Do you have a great holiday display or…
