The Lessoning

What is that echoing cacophony I perceive across the landscape? That exultant ululation that fair speaks of expectations nearing realization, of anticipation no longer banked behind intervening walls of wretched patience? What is it in the air that seems to guide unsteady hands, struggling to maintain some modicum of control for the sake of appearances, to the corners of wall calendars, there to tremble as the urge to grasp and tear is barely throttled?

And accompanying those…

A Season's Flirtation

I know this must be my imagination. It's too early yet, only the late middle of August!

But I caught a brief...something...in the air this morning. Out of the corner of my eye, a leaf falling from a tree near my car as I unlocked it for my short commute to work this morning. Leaves fall all the time, yes it's true, but this one seemed to sail, to swing, arc one way upward, pause, and then downward only to swoop higher in the opposite direction, all the way to the ground. No…

Theatricality

So I got an email this week letting me know about this event at the Hollywood Theatre.

I am so going to this. It's a no-lose, win-win kinda thing. As in I get to go to the Hollywood Theatre, which by itself is a treat. For one thing, I haven't been inside this grand old place in…

Officially Moving to Portland.

Had I found this site prior to a couple of days ago, I may have found enough information to sway my family and me elsewhere. However, our visit trip is booked, and the move is all but tattooed onto our knuckles. We arrive Wednesday, August 28th and will be staying through the 2nd of September; a Monday, to discover the city and find a home. From the "extensive" research I have done, I have targeted a few ideal neighborhoods. These neighborhoods seem to be the obvious targets of most native…

Carting Around

You have guests coming into town soon. They have an agenda.

“Please”, they fairly scream down the phone, “before we leave Arreegawn to come back home, please take us to eat at some of those wonderful food carts you have! We hear so much about those! Unless it's raining, we don't like to be wet when we're eating, except if maybe you have some umbrellas?”

You explain patiently that shipping umbrellas into Oregon is prohibitively expensive and that most…

Unplug!

So this happens a lot: our young charge Bella is expecting friends to visit so they can all hang out and play together, perhaps even have a sleepover. She's excited about it because she loves her friends, and she's excited at the prospect of finally not having to sit in mute horror of having a conversation with we grownups, because our conversations tend to be full of “lessons” and telling her things “for her own good”, and “Please bathe!” and “Please stop bathing, you've been in there for…
