Portland Blog - This Week in Portland, August 29-September 5, 2009

Holy crap--we're coming up on September already? The thought of September, while one of my favorite months, conjures up a panicked "oh-my-God-I-better-hurry-up-and-get-outside-and-enjoy-it-before-it-is-too-late" feeling for me.

My first crop of Portland hops are madly climbing up my deck railing and getting fatter by the minute, reminding me that harvest time will soon be here. Yes, our 2009 Portland summertime is soon to be only a distant memory of scorchingly (100+?!) hot days and… Continue

Portland Blog: This Week in Portland August 22 - 29

Ah, the return of summer. Sunny, warm and awesome! We definitely needed a few more weeks of this warm stuff before we could possibly allow the season to turn. As I type this, I am watching my soon-to-husband attempt to de-flea our cat in the front yard. Every time the flea comb touches down, the cat bites his hand. Its actually pretty comical to watch from the window though I know its frustrating for both of them. Poor little bugger-- fleas are awful! (We did, of course, treat him as… Continue

Celtic Arts Festival 21-22 August

The Left Coast Eisteddfod is a Welsh-American Performing Arts festival in Portland, Oregon in August 2009. An Eisteddfod is a Welsh performing arts festival and competition, held in Wales since the 12th century and today all over the world. As Saint Patrick's Day is Irish, the Highland Games are Scottish - the Eisteddfod and its competitive performance of song and story are Welsh.

This year's event will include:

Friday night rock concert, 21 August 2009, with Portland bands…

Community Supported Agriculture

This year, my mother and I went in together on buying a share in a Community Supported Agriculture farm.

You buy a portion of the harvest and either go pick up your fruits and veggies or they're delivered to you or somewhere on a (usually) weekly schedule. You ensure your family good, wholesome produce, help a local farm be successful and contribute to the local economy. By choosing organic, you help protect our soil and the future of our food supply.

We chose…

Portland Blog: This Week in Portland August 15-22

There is a slight chill in the air and it feels very autumn like. I went for a long run over lunch and fell in love with Portland all over again. Its so gorgeous here. Ah, fair PDX....As I circled Peninsula Park in North Portland, I found half a dozen women set up with easels; each painting their own version of the park. No idea if they were part of a class or if they were all just friends with a common hobby- it was really neat to see nonetheless. If you have never experienced the gorgeous… Continue

Portland Blog: This Week in Portland August 8 - August 15

So August moves in like a cold and quiet ghost. Its over 40 degrees cooler this week than it was last week. How odd. I have to admit I am loving the cooler weather though it most certainly is not feeling very 'summery' at present considering the completely overcast sky and the slight chill in the air. We haven't seen more than a peek of the sun in two days now. Things change. I'll turn my AC on again this year, I'm sure of it.

Whenever August hits us, I have this sudden crazed… Continue

get my sweat on

Hallo all! I'm looking for suggestions on fun ways to get my sweat on near my new neighborhood in SE Portland. I'll be moving really soon, and I'd like to find a good place for ashtanga yoga, and/or west african dance, and/or tae kwon do ..
Thoughts?

Thanks! Can't wait to finally move in..

Portland Blog: This Week in Portland August 1 - August 8

If you're reading this, you survived Oregon Heatwave 2009. Somehow, we didn't break any records but WHOA, seriously-- this was some crazy hot weather. 107? Eh, yeah. Real hot. This really doesn't happen in Portland-- in my many years here, I dare say its never been so hot. Many of my poor Koi fish, not accustomed or well suited to boiling lava-like water, succumbed to the heat despite my frantic attempts to save them. So sad. ;-(

We did install the gigantic old air conditioner and I… Continue
