When a Cricket is not a Cricket: Cicadas in Oregon

As posted on the Nature of Portland blog:

I love the sound of crickets in the evening.  They always remind me of summers where I grew up in North Carolina.  It seems like we had more crickets there, and where my grandparents lived in the mid-west, than we do here in western Oregon (or should I say HEAR in western Oregon?). I don't know if that's true, but it…

Educate, Explore, Enjoy

You know, I brag and brag on this city. I'm so excited to be here every single day that sometimes my exuberance for it just bursts forth and I wax rhapsodic to anyone who will stay in the room to listen to it. I ooh and ahh over the scenery (especially on those cool overcast autumn days when the colors seem to radiate and the air carries the scent of chimney smoke), I actually grin to myself when all alone on a Forest Park path or taking a ride on my bike through the southeast neighborhoods…

UnBox'd

I've come bearing a warning: beware boxes!

Boxes, my friends, are treacherous. Who can really trust them? I know I don't. Sometimes decorum demands that I succumb to ritual and therefore must gently, trepidaciously unseal a festively-colored, bow-festooned carton to behold dubious wonders, the expectation of which shines forth from the wide smile of the gift-giver because he or she is the one having the most fun in the room.

That's right, gifts are for the…

Nostalgia Strikes Again

More often than not I'm listening to music while sitting here at home in my office poking the pixelbeast, and much of the time it's via my favorite radio station's website KINK.fm. This afternoon, however, I thought I'd browse a few other Portland-centric radio stations, mostly because, except for…

Summer Whine

You're not hot, are you?

Lemme tell you something, one summer when I lived in West Texas, I actually put the egg-fried-on-the-sidewalk hypothesis to the test. Worked a treat. Worked the next aftenoon, too. Week after that, same. Year after that, ditto. The point here is that it's hot all summer, BIG heat, every summer in Texas. Portland doesn't compare. Some places in the state of Oregon get a bit warm, sure. Burns, maybe. Baker City, okay. But Portland stumbles into a hot day like a…
