Park It

One of the first places in Portland my wife and I visited when we first moved to Portland was Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

We only knew two people in the city, a couple who were acquaintances of the missus' family in Texas. They helped us move into our tiny apartment downtown and turn in the truck at the nearest U-Haul facility.  After ensuring that we were…

Dish

When my wife and I first came to Portland, we were of course wow'd by nearly everything we came across or were introduced to.  Having moved from a more conservative area (the Dallas “metroplex”), we were naturally agog as we took in the cobblestoned sections of downtown, the urban-cultural mixing bowls that are Pioneer Courthouse Square and Tom McCall Waterfront Park, the quazi-and-not-so-quazi hippyfied and punkyfied and hipsterfied denizens from all corners of the city.  It was an…

Livin' Is Easy

Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability. ~Sam Keen

This morning sounded like summer, felt like summer before I even got out of bed.

To my mind, each season has a voice.  Fall clatters with deciduous limbs and the chattering of dry leaves like bare-bones crickets (when it is dry; granted that sound is heard less often here).  Winter is nearly mute, speaking mostly through people muttering from under thick coats and wooly hats.  Spring is an…

Fourth

I hope your July 4th celebrations were fun and safe.  I actually spent a considerable amount of time sitting beside a pool (not in the pool; my recreational habits tend to be dirt-bound since I apparently lack the center of gravity and buoyancy deemed optimal for swimming), basking in the sun (encased in a thick layer of SPF 45, since my flesh takes to solar radiation like a rhinoceros takes to wind-surfing), and eating hot dogs and drinking beer (here is where I excel).

I should have…
