Driving After Dark

This may surprise anyone who really knows me, since ordinarily I'm not at all a fan of either automobiles or freeways, but I'm sort of digging my current commute.

I have a contract gig in Tualatin, and I have to drive most of it on I-205 (side-swiping I-5 for only a few feet, thank the godz).  Yes 'Ugh!' is exactly what I thought too, when I was told by the agency that I was hired.  Thirty-minute drive each way, most of it freeway, the makings of a commuter nightmare that I had been…

Squared

I had the best cheesesteak sangwich the other day.

If you haven't had one of these gustatory marvels, I suggest you consult your physician and then ignore his or her cautions and go get one. Your mouth will thank you, or would if it weren't so busy. My recommendation: Steaks Fifth Avenue at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Easily located, just follow the sound of collective “omnomnomz” forming a nimbus around the cart.

While you're gnawing on the first of two (or is that just me?),…

Serenity Now

I'm going to fall back on that universal cop-out, the one many people use when pressed to explain their belief systems: I'm not religious, but I am spiritual.

Oh, you didn't ask? My bad.

The truth is that I'm a lapsed everything. If my seeking life was an actual path, the grass on both sides of the sidewalk would be stomped flat. I've exchanged many a come-hither glance with a variety of disciplines. I'm the guy floating from table to table, full of ideas and conversation, but…

Climb Sublime

Have I told you lately how much I hate running?  Oh I do.  Muchly.  In times past I've sought to convince myself that I like to run, and in every case have ended with trembling legs, sprained lungs (you laugh, but I know what a sprain feels like), my teeth awash with the tart taste of bile and failure.  Running sucks.  I don't think you suck if you enjoy running, understand, but the act itself sucks the very suckness of suckitude.…

A River Runs Around It

I lived on an island for awhile, when I was between the ages of eight and ten. My family moved from Roswell, New Mexico to Puerto Rico when my dad was transferred to Ramey Air Force Base.

It was very cool. White sand beaches, palm trees, hermit crabs to occupy our sand castles. Balmy weather punctuated every year by terrifying threats of hurricanes. BIG bugs. Even though we lived on base, amidst the regimented confines of military life, it was still a kid's adventure. When my dad…
