"John, I see that you posted this back in 2014, but, like Michael McD and Katie McM, I'd be very interested to know if (and how ) you found the answers to your questions. I'll be moving to Portland in the Fall, but I will be renting for the…"

The skinny on neighborhood differences?

Hi Future Neighbors!Like many others in this discussion, I too am relocating to Portland in July 2014. I visited Portland in January and was able to explore many NE and SE neighborhoods. I will be buying, not renting, a house. (I have a real estate agent who is helping me, but I want your input too!)My question to this group is a bit more nuanced than the others I have read here. I am hoping this group can give me the honest skinny on neighborhood differences:* What is the difference between…See More

Which Portland neighborhood do you call home? Or, are you Moving to Portland?
Relocating to Portland!
About Me:
Mid-40something, over-educated, don't-know-what-I-want-to-be-when-I-grow-up kinda of guy. PhD in engineering from top school, sworn off corporate America for all the obvious reasons. Vegetarian. Looking to restart my life in a new state, new town, new neighborhood, new house! Dogs, meditation, and piano fill my time.
What do you love about Portland?
Discovered I am Portland without knowing it all these years! Kick-back friendly, organic, Earth/higher consciousness, foodie/beer kind of town. Since I was a child I have always loved misty rain--makes me feel like a plant being cleansed and nourished.
My music:
New Age, New Age piano, classical, opera (laaaaaa!)
What's your favorite Portland neighborhood and why?
This is where I need everyone's help! I've visited Portland for a week in January and explored the Alberta Arts, Irvington, Alameda, Grant Park, Rose City, Hollywood, Laurelhurst, Beaumont, Sunnyside, North Mt. Tabor (kind of misnamed, isn't it?), Richmond, "Hawethorn" neighborhoods. I'm trying to decide in which neighborhood to land. Strongly inclined to buy a house, given the fact I have three rather large dogs and renting might be difficult. (And I don't know that I really *want* to rent!)
Favorite quote:
May all Beings love and be loved.
