New York based rapper Mykki Blanco will be performing a benefit show for Yale Union on June 30, 2013. Cosmic Angel: The Illuminati Prince/ss is the debut rap release from the multi-talented artist, who has explored the many sides of an international clubbing scene through music and performance art. Melding different genres including rave, hip-hop, trip-hop, and riot grrl as deftly as she switches gender roles, Mykki Blanco swerves with ease in and out of each with artful lyricism, aggressive…See More

MICHAEL STIRLING at Yale Union (YU)

April 20, 2013 at 10pm to April 21, 2013 at 2am
For the last thirty years, Michael Stirling has been a disciple of the Indian classical vocalist, Pandit Pran Nath (1918–1996) and a student of the American minimalist composer, Terry Riley (1935-). On Saturday, April 20, Stirling will perform three Hindustani ragas. It is easiest, perhaps, to think of a raga as a tonal framework for composition and improvisation. A raga is not fixed, but is created through time by a lengthy evolutionary process. Each Hindustani (North Indian) raga is assigned…See More

BACK IN THE USSR at Yale Union (YU)

March 3, 2013 from 2pm to 7pm
RESONANCE ENSEMBLE presents a program of Soviet choral compositions at Yale Union. Under the Soviet regime’s strict censorship, composers found different ways to cope. They wrote nationalist propaganda, subversive works in “musical code,” or oppositional pieces that endangered their lives or forced them into exile. This concert, presented by Resonance Ensemble as part of A Shostakovich Festival, will include choral pieces by Shostakovich, Pärt,…See More

Walter Marchetti's Natura Morta at Yale Union (YU)

December 15, 2012 from 8pm to 10pm
We say goodbye to the ephemeral distinction of two thousand and twelve with Walter Marchetti’sNatura Morta (1988). Composed for a grand piano covered in fruit, Natura Morta is slow with no punctures, peaks, or destinies. There is so seemingly little to the composition that it inevitably invites the feeling that one could have made it, but don’t lose your head, one couldn’t have. There can be no question that what makes Walter Marchetti’s Natura Morta safe from larvae and rust is not its…See More

Black Dice at YU at YU Contemporary

May 12, 2012 from 8pm to 11pm
BLACK DICEA PerformanceMay 12, 2012, 9pm (doors, 8pm)$10 – PURCHASE NOWIn all fairness, Black Dice are hard to keep up with. Concept-slingers as much as musicians, they formed during the late 90′s in Providence, RI. They have gone from broken aggressor to amiable droner, and now have moved-15 years later-into a much poppier locale. They’ve never lived at the bottom of a rhetorical deep freeze,…See More

There, he remains an object of intense fandom. Here, he remains relatively obscure.Born in 1941 in Addis Ababa, Ahmed left school to become a…See More
