LUBOMYR MELNYK - Performing in Portland for the 1st time at Yale Union

February 28, 2014 from 9pm to 10pm
In the early 1970s, Lubomyr Melnyk sped up. Frustrated by the “lingering theatrical and nightmarish qualities” of contemporary classical composers, he turned the other way and developed a playing style that relies on hand speed to build dense sequences of polyrhythmic notes. He calls it continuous music. Melnyk released a number of solo piano and ensemble works on the Bandura label in the 1970s and 1980s, though relatively little was heard from him until the CD reissue of …See More

MICHAEL STIRLING at Yale Union (YU)

April 20, 2013 at 10pm to April 21, 2013 at 2am
For the last thirty years, Michael Stirling has been a disciple of the Indian classical vocalist, Pandit Pran Nath (1918–1996) and a student of the American minimalist composer, Terry Riley (1935-). On Saturday, April 20, Stirling will perform three Hindustani ragas. It is easiest, perhaps, to think of a raga as a tonal framework for composition and improvisation. A raga is not fixed, but is created through time by a lengthy evolutionary process. Each Hindustani (North Indian) raga is assigned…See More

BACK IN THE USSR at Yale Union (YU)

March 3, 2013 from 2pm to 7pm
RESONANCE ENSEMBLE presents a program of Soviet choral compositions at Yale Union. Under the Soviet regime’s strict censorship, composers found different ways to cope. They wrote nationalist propaganda, subversive works in “musical code,” or oppositional pieces that endangered their lives or forced them into exile. This concert, presented by Resonance Ensemble as part of A Shostakovich Festival, will include choral pieces by Shostakovich, Pärt,…See More

Walter Marchetti's Natura Morta at Yale Union (YU)

December 15, 2012 from 8pm to 10pm
We say goodbye to the ephemeral distinction of two thousand and twelve with Walter Marchetti’sNatura Morta (1988). Composed for a grand piano covered in fruit, Natura Morta is slow with no punctures, peaks, or destinies. There is so seemingly little to the composition that it inevitably invites the feeling that one could have made it, but don’t lose your head, one couldn’t have. There can be no question that what makes Walter Marchetti’s Natura Morta safe from larvae and rust is not its…See More

A year after he disappeared on the day of his father's funeral, Walker Janeway returns to the city. He takes up temporary residence in the studio where thirty-five years earlier his father Ned and Ned's late architectural business partner, Theo, lived and designed the iconic house that would make them famous. The People's Republic of Portland at Portland Center Stage

March 21, 2015 at 7:30pm to April 19, 2015 at 9:30pm
Portland is garnering lots of attention lately—for our leadership in sustainability; for our food scene; for being, well, weird. And now we’ve caught the attention of writer/actor Lauren Weedman. In the few months she spent here in the spring of 2011 performing her play BUST, Lauren’s imagination was captured by all things Portland. And so we asked her to write a play. About Portland. How will this former Daily Show faux-spondent treat us? What does Portland look like through Weedman’s unique…See More

Other Desert Cities at Portland Center Stage

February 21, 2015 at 7:30pm to March 22, 2015 at 9:30pm
Polly and Lyman Wyeth are a quintessential California success story. Well-connected politically, comfortable financially, and enjoying their retirement years in Palm Springs, where they can still move in the Republican, old Hollywood social circle of their working years. So what if Polly’s sister and former screenwriting partner is a just-out-of-rehab liberal, and their grown children are also ideological opposites from their parents? Well, families accept these differences, don’t they? But…See More

January 24, 2015 at 7:30pm to March 8, 2015 at 9:30pm
Leila and Rashid attempt to solve their relationship issues by inviting a relative stranger into their bedroom to engage in a threesome. What begins as a hilariously awkward evening soon becomes an experience fraught with secrets and tension, raising issues of sexism, possession and independence. El Guindi’s play Pilgrims Musa and Sheri in the New World was the winner of the prestigious Steinberg/American Theater Critics Association’s New Play Award in 2012, and he is also the recipient of the…See More
