I'm stuck in for FL now but I want to get back to the Northwest so bad. I miss the more progressive vibe, mountains, douglas fir, and beaches with rocks, mountains, tide pools, and waves. There just isn't anything like Powell's Books here either!

I'm trying to find a place to rent too - the best bet so far has been Craigslist... it looks like landlords don't deal via real estate agents often.

Have you checked Craigslist? This really does seem to be the best source of rentals. Belmont runs alongside Hawthorne as another option. Its a quick bike ride to get from one to the other as a point of reference.
