Hi Doug, I made my move out to Oregon in August from San Jose, CA. I was looking throughout Portland, but came across a master developement called Villebois (means village in the woods) in Wilsonsonville, 20 min south of Portland. Yes, it's a develo…

Indeed, it can be VERY hard to move to a new city when you don't have any local friends yet, or your usual support system. Just hang in there and take the necessary steps to feel established...in several months things will feel more like home and yo…

You're going to love Portland. With a low budget and your pups, you may want to post a pet-friendly rent needed ad on Craigs List. Best of luck to you. I'm trying to find a temp job until I can massage again. The Oregon requirements to get licensed…

Hello Nancy, I just finished posting almost the same blog as this one you posted in June. I'm looking to move there in about a month, similar situation, except LOW budget, looking to rent. Starting over as well. Two golden retrievers, just us three…

It isn't in SE, but I live in a complex called CYAN. Its a brand-new eco-built, LEED certified building in downtown. We have our own washer/dryer, and all the appliances are sized for the apartment they are in. Thus, I pay $18/month for electricity…

Thanks for the article Lulu. I too am a dog owner and lover who just moved here from, yes, California. Although it's not as pet friendly there, they allow dogs of all sizes in some of their malls which I have mixed feelings about. I worked in a day…

Emma, I'm sure you will love Portland. I'd never lived anywhere so eco conscious, green, and friendly. I'm living with a couple who don't have a tv, cell phones, and have me using their own green cleaning products. I'm even composting for the first…

Hey Paula, No one said it was going to be easy, but I think it's going to be worth it. My realtor is excellent, but he isn't really someone who usually deals with rentals. He helped me because I am a client and will be buying a home using his servic…

I'm inspired by those of you who are doing this on your own. I've been wanting to do it too! Having made a move form MA to AZ by myself in '04 that turned out very badly in the end, I thought I'd move to OR, but I got so scared I came back to MA. I'…

Hey Nancy. I just moved to Portland two weeks ago from Montana, so feel free to chat with me anytime about your transitioning process, etc. It's nice to go through the experience with other people who are making a fresh start. :) Niki

Hey Adam I'm a fellow New Yorker (Staten Island), but came to Portland last month after raising a family in CA. for 25 years. I too am alone here, but I know I'm going to love it here. I'm confident I'll find work here (massage therapy) once I get l…

My first month in Portland has already come and gone. I still am waiting to take these exams to become a licensed LMT in Or which is such a drag. I have gotten the chance to get around town, get lost, and find my way back. I guess that's how one lea…

Even though it's a bit too early for me to be looking at homes, I did and fell in love with a gorgeous bungalow in Woodlawn. Does anyone out there have anything to add about this neighborhood? It's right by Condordia U. I take one of my massage exam…

Nancy, thanks for Alex's number. I talked to him the other night, and he was very helpful. He answered a lot of questions we had and put some of our concerns to rest. I hope everything is going well for you, Mike.

Nancy, I live in CA too and I am excited for you! I know one of these days, I too will be making the move...when the time is right. In the meantime, I will look forward to hearing your posts and when you get settled in your place, please let us know…

Which Portland neighborhood do you call home?
not sure
About Me:
Portland is calling to me to get a fresh start on life.Am recently single after 25 years, kids are off to college, and I'm done with California. I'm a massage therapist and love what I do. Am selling a home and want to buy a charming cottage/bungalow in an equally charming neighborhood that's safe and friendly. Am finding great affordable houses, but a sense of community is important to me. Also,am a dog lover and once in a while I'll meet a cat I like.
What do you love about Portland?
It seems to offer what I need in my life right now. Big city with small town attitudes;beautiful,affordable,friendly,eco-conscience,progressive,independent;something for everyone.
My music:
Tom Petty,John Mellencamp,Jason Mraz,Bruce Springstein, most classic rock,R&B,and anything dance worthy. No thanks to country or rap.
What's your favorite Portland neighborhood and why?
which I knew.
Favorite quote:

Moving to Portland ASAP

I'm newly single after 25 years and since my kids are in college,I'm ready to leave California (am a native New Yorker), with my dog and start fresh in Portland. I plan to buy a small home to call my own, but want to get the neighborhood right.I'm a massage therapist, so want to work out of my home, as well as with an established spa. Sellwood sounds fun, but I'm very open. Any suggestions?

Nancy - Congratulations on your new home! If you are ever in the St. Johns neighborhood....let me know and we can meet up. I don't drive a lot and rarely get as far as Wilsonville ! Enjoy your newly created life here in Oregon!

Hi Nancy,

If you are still looking for a small house to purchase, the price of this house just came down. http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2230-SE-22nd-Ave-Portland-OR-97214/53909375_zpid/

Colonial Heights is a very nice close-in neighborhood. I am from LA, and just love Portland after I came up here for school. Welcome to PDX!
