- My wife and son and I got the hell out of L.A. and moved to Portland in September of 2006. It's such a great city but I haven't seen enough of it yet!
- What do you love about Portland?
- Well, let's start with four seasons and trees ... then there's the healthy lifestyle, public transportation, and movie theaters with beer ... oh, yeah and BEER.
- My music:
- Right now I'm obsessed with The Avett Brothers ... after that, there's The Beatles, Wilco, Spoon, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Nick Drake, Gomez - I'm all over the map.
- What's your favorite Portland neighborhood and why?
- Well, I love a lot of them in SE, of course, and almost every other 'hood I've visited have great areas. I'm still checking them all out!

Good place to watch the inauguration?
I know it's on early here on the left coast but does anyone know of cool places that are going to be showing all the action from D.C. on Tuesday? It would be fun to hang out with a group of folks and celebrate W's exit and Obama's swearing in. Just checking ... thanks!

Where can I recycle my Christmas tree?
Anyone know places that are taking Christmas trees for mulching/chipping/recycling? Will the city have a pick-up day/time curbside? Just checking - thanks!

Movie recommendation for this weekend
If any of you are documentary fans, you should really try to check out the film "Dear Zachary" playing at the Hollywood Theater this Saturday and Sunday only. Be prepared, this is a devastating film that will leave you emotionally exhausted and outraged and in tears multiple times but it is also an amazing work due to not just the subject matter, but the director's intimate association with the material. Karen said… - hey, john...great meeting you tonight! you totally just called me out on my *slight* obsession i have with the avett brothers. there are too many times when i can't seem to stop listening to them....for weeks and weeks, or even months. it almost borders on ridiculous! and YES i was at the zoo show last summer. i will never forget it, not only cause it was a fabulous show but also its where i had my (what i call) "fuck it" moment. when you just throw up your hands and say "fuck it i don't care if i get wet in the rain".....i ended the night with dancing in the rain with complete strangers and having the most fabulous time!! thank god for "fuck it" moments like that. i don't have my tickets yet for the upcoming shows at the crystal, but i'm gonna get on that. if you dig bluegrass then you should check out "trampled by turtles" at the wonder ballroom on saturday, 28mar. they are a friends' band from back in MN....a guaranteed GREAT time. honest. anywhoo, we'll catch up another time, i'm sure. BTW, you've got a great eye and take some pretty rad photos!

Robert May said… - Hi John. I didn't go. I haven't been to any concerts since I moved here in 2007, due to lack of time, and more importantly, lack of money. I never did get into Di Meola. At least at the time I was listening to him, he seemed to be playing at high speed just to show off his manual dexterity. McLaughlin, on the other hand, played beautiful, emotive music at high speed.
