And to think most people dont like dandylions. Such beautiful yellow flowers, which soon push up delightful seed heads or "wishers" and the plant is good to eat as well. Even the flowers can be eaten. Ever hear of "Dandylion wine?" Wait a minute, th…

A couple of years ago I had never heard of Vermiculture before. Today not only do I know Vermiculture means growing worms but I have 3 worm bins with somewhere around 6,000 to 7,000 worms (Eisenia foetida for those in the know) busily digesting all…

Hi Hank, Everything is definitely coming back to life. Roses are budding and full of aphids (I use neem oil mixed with water in a spray bottle for this) and many other plants are shooting up and out and look great. Sadly, my beloved banana appears…

It's been a while since there was any activity here so I'll try to stir things up. Much of the escollonia here is showing signs of delayed cold stress from that cold spell we had last December.  Showing signs? I understated that, we have dead escoll…

Milwaukie to Oregon City
About Me:
I am the horticulture steward of a 21 acre senior living facility located just a couple hundred yards from the Willamette River in the great pacific northwest. After caring for this campus for the better part of 30 years I have been persuaded to share my experiances with others who are interested in the plant world. Hope you enjoy the journey.
What do you love about Portland?
Mild winters, mild summers, it's a great place to garden.

Vermiculture and me

A couple of years ago I had never heard of Vermiculture before. Today not only do I know Vermiculture means growing worms but I have 3 worm bins with somewhere around 6,000 to 7,000 worms (Eisenia foetida for those in the know) busily digesting all the kitchen garbage I can feed them. If I’m late with the “worm chow” I swear I can hear them chanting “feed me Hank, feed me”.

If you dont have room for a veggie garden in your back yard, or if you live in an apt and cant have a garden, here's a list of Community Gardens in the Portland area.

St Patricks Day

Just a reminder that Wednesday is March 17th. Which as everyone knows is St Patricks day! I've included a photo of my old band playing at "Kell's Irish Pub," which has one of the biggest St Patricks day celebrations on the west coast. It's loud, it's crazy and it started last Friday night and will go on till Wednesday

Blanche and Edmund

Blanche married Henry the Fat. The exact date has been lost in the mist of history, sometime in the middle 1200’s. In 1273 Henry died, it is said by suffocating in his own fat, leaving Blanche in the little town of Provins, France with at least 1 child, possibly more...
