Check it out, everyone...
I'm writing this post from Tel Aviv, Israel. I've been hanging out
here for a couple of weeks and, when people ask where I am from,
they light up when I tell them Portland. For obvious reasons, this
was totally shocking and unexpected. When I moved to Portland from
New Jersey in 1999, I hadn't even heard of it. I just came to visit
and never went back. It was like finding a secret universe of
awesomeness that nobody had paved over with sprawl and misery yet.
Please don't let that last statement stand as my description of New
Jersey, ok? Crap, now I sound defensive.
Anyway, I found this article online. No, I haven't been working the
whole time. I swear I found this article in between nightclubbing,
burning myself on the beach like a human lobster, eating falafel,
covering myself in mud from the Dead Sea, and wandering the Negev
like Caine in Kung Fu.
Would you believe that, at the Dead Sea, I met another real estate
agent from Portland? What the hell are the odds of that? We tried
to sell some Orthodox Rabbis a condo in the Pearl. I kid.
My theory for why people in Israel knew and loved Portland goes
like this: There are lots of Jews in New York. There are lots of
Jews in Israel. They talk and, like in my case, are often related
to each other. The New York Times loves Portland. Jews in NY read
the New York Times. They tell people in Israel who go visit and
love it. Of course, not only Jews. There are people here form all
over the world.
I meant to just post this article but couldn't stop typing. Enjoy
