I happen to have an ongoing love affair with some of Portland's best restaurants, and one of the best ways a restaurant can warm my heart is to offer up that magic combo of great food, friendly service, and a relaxing, comfortable ambiance. And what better place to find this than Portland's Echo Restaurant, located in the Eliot neighborhood along NE MLK. Echo is housed in an old brick building dating back to the late 1800s. So, it has that old Portland ambiance built right in: red bricks, dark wood, dim lighting, and an entirely chill urban feel that is very comfortable.

Admittedly, it took me a while to warm up to Echo's charms. When I first visited the restaurant a couple years ago, the service seemed lukewarm, and while the food was good, the place just didn't grab me. But now, I'm hooked and I highly recommend Echo to all my friends. New owners Adam Treanor and Justin Selders have infused the place with new energy and welcoming, friendly service.  You can tell a lot of love and attention is being paid to your dining experience, which I always appreciate.  Echo has a  notoriously great happy hour, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner of high quality food without spending your entire week's dining budget. And, they recently got a nod from Portland Monthly for their delicious cocktails.  They have a full bar and wine selection, and rotating tap of microbrews.  Some of their best menu items include the Echo burger, and a crock of steaming hot comfort food: Echo mac n cheese. On a cold drizzly night in Portland, it is to die for! In the summertime, slip out onto their tiny private patio, tucked into the alleyway between two buildings, and hide out in the sunshine for a while.

Echo offers a full menu until 2am every night, with a late night special menu. This puts Echo in the same league as a handful of other late night Portland restaurants, like Montage. They have started featuring weekly live music, and I hear it's really taking off.  This is a great place to enjoy dinner if you are going to a Blazers game or a show at Wonder Ballroom, and once the new lightrail streetcar lines are completed along Broadway/Weidler, it will be even easier to get to Echo.

Found ourselves back in Portland last week and couldn't wait to go back to Echo. They didn't disappoint! We are back home now and I am craving their Mac N' Cheese, gimme some!!!

Just got back to house we're staying at while visiting from the SF Bay Area and had to run to computer to Yelp my review of Echo. 5 stars for service, 5 stars for drinks and 5 stars for food. The cheese stuffed peppers and mac n' cheese appetizers were divine. Follow that with the 1/2 lb burger and steak salad, heavenly divine. Finish it off with cannollies (sp) and peach cobbler and you have two very satisfied diners who had to be rolled out of the joint. Nice touch with the cucumber water, very refreshing.

Thanks, I am glad to hear we both love this place :-) I forgot to mention the pot de cremes...or selection of creme brulees for dessert. OMG, to die for!
