Consider Co-housing

As a baby-boomer nearing retirement, it is time for me to think about where I want to live in the next 20 years. I have found co-housing,and I want to share that idea with others who may also be…Continue

Last night at Daybreak Cohousing we had another lovely dinner. Terri cooked potato-leek soup and made a pear tart. A lovely candlelit dinner for 10 of us. That is a nice thing about cohousing. Ready-made neighbors and ready-made opportunities for social interaction. I get home from work at 6 pm, and after changing, I can go over to the common house for a nice dinner. I prepare a dinner about once a month, but in turn I get to enjoy meals cooked by others many more times. I think Cohousing in in the future for a lot of reasons -- baby boomers getting older, people downsizing, in Portland, a quest for more urban as opposed to suburban living.

Portland is considering changing the car insurance rules to encourage individuals who own a vehicle to consider renting it out to others on a short term basis. Hopefully this will mean more people don't feel the need to own their own cars. I think this sounds like a great way to encourage more bicycle or foot traffic, rather than cars, cars, cars....

I live in the only all rental cohousing community in Portland. We are called Kailash Ecovillage. Our name says something very important about what kind of community we are. Lots of gardening, but also other sustainable features. We have monthly pot luck preceded by a speaker, a community night for socializing, and we do a lot of resource sharing. Definitely another resource for living well in Portland. Check us out at KaliashEcovillage dot com.
