Is late June too late to start your garden? I know, it's never too late to start gardening. We're moving and don't get into our new house until late June and I'm afraid it will be past prime gardening season.
Also, general question...what is that plant/tree that looks like a tree and there are big flowers that look like opened roses? The leaves look shiny sort of like gardenia's. Everyone has them, they are really beautiful and come in different colors, pinks, white, red, etc. I tried to research on line and can't find them.
I don't think late June is too late, but much of the certainty will reside with the weather. If it is still cool and wet, then by all means plant away. If it is cool and sunny, plant and pay close attention moisture in the soil. If it is already warm and sunny, then plant and be vigilant about maintaining moisture content and don't expect much this year. Next year, however, you'll kiss yourself for your work this year. Good luck.
Regarding the mystery plant, it's camellia. You are right - they are currently in bloom everywhere in many shades of white to pink with leaves that shine and are leathery. To see some look at the Oregon State University Landscape Plants page and find camellias.

Great! Thank you so much! My curiousity has been appeased.
I will also try to do some gardening when we move. If it's too late, maybe it'll give me a good chance to figure out what I want to do for next year.
