Welcome to YOUR Portland Neighborhood Community

Hello everyone!
I am a life long Chicago resident making the BIG move to Portland in June, but I don't know where to live! My partner and I are 28 years old, pretty laid back, have 3 small dogs. Love restaurants, cute coffee shops, LIVE MUSIC, thrift stores, cute boutiques, and nice people! We want to rent a home/bungalow that has a yard for our pups to run around in, they don't have one here in Chicago and they NEED one and we NEED them to have one. :) I have been looking on Craigslist religiously to get some ideas of the areas. I was looking at Alberta Arts, Hawthorne, Sellwood? I don't know where these neighborhoods are in relation to each other, but we want something where we can walk to places, get to downtown if we want, etc. Neither one of us have jobs yet, so that's not a factor about being close to work.

Any suggestions would be wonderful!

We would like a 2bedroom or more under $1800.

Thanks so much!

Hello Kimberly,

I don't know if you have found a place yet or not, but St. John's is a wonderful little community to live. There are many reasonable houses for rent in your price range, good neighbors, very friendly dog community, great little shops to hang out in and huge Forest Park to walk dogs, jog, etc. Five or ten minutes to downtown Portland. Please consider, I don't think you would be disappointed.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much, Vivyan!
I have looked on CL at places in St. John's. I've heard good things about it!

Thank you!

St. Johns is a very charming, and popular North Portland neighborhood. Here is a link to our St. Johns page...I think you can tell they are quite community focused.

One of the things you will find is that Portland has one of the biggest, baddest transportation systems ever so there is nothing out of range if you need to get to it.

I just moved to Beaverton myself and am looking at the same thing you are as far as learning the neighborhoods, so I'm afraid I'm not much help there. I have been attending networking meetings in the Alberta Arts, Eliot and a couple of places I'm not sure which neighborhood they're in. :)

But haven't had any trouble getting anywhere I want to get to. I advise getting a good GPS, however, to learn your way around (in case you get stuck somewhere while you're exploring and need to find your way home).

The biggest challenge I have found is the lack of street signs in Portland itself. They may be there, but they're not where you would normally look to find them or they're hidden by tree branches. Other than that, folks are always willing to give you at least 3 ways to get anywhere.

For your pups, connect with pdxdog.com. Great resource for dog owners in Portland. I also have a 4-legged son who will be moving down in the Spring with my husband (maybe sooner) that I'm looking to find our perfect place for. PDXdog was/is great for information.

Good luck!

Buying/renting? For $1800/month you can likely buy in a lot of Portland neighborhoods, especially with the extension of the $8000 tax credit!

I'm originally from Chicago, too.

I lived in the Alphabet District (close in NW) and rented when I first moved here...loved it! Within walking distance of lots of shops/restaurants, a dog-friendly park, a big grocery store (as well as smaller neighborhood specialty stores), and PGE park. In addition, the light-rail (a much cleaner, quieter electric train system than the 'El') was nearby to take me to downtown or the airport. It was a great base to explore the rest of Portland and decide where to buy, with that "city" feel.
