Possibly moving to Portland... suggestions for neighborhoods?

Hello there. I'm currently considering moving to Portland and I am looking for some advice with choosing a neighborhood. I am a 21 year old musician so an area with a good music/art scene would be awesome. I am sorta looking for a place that is similar to Chicago's Wicker Park area. Affordable rent is important to me as well. Also, I am vegan, so any vegan/vegetarian friendly areas would be a huge plus. Access to public transit would also be nice.

Also, a list of secondary neighborhoods with the most affordable rent (also safe neighborhoods please) would be helpful. I may end up having to sacrifice living in a hip neighborhood if it is much more affordable to live elsewhere.

Best,
Steve

Hey Steve,

My wife and I are making our move from Pilsen to Portland in late August and have a couple of friends that live in Portland. There are a few nice neighborhoods that are pretty similar to wicker park. Pearl district is a little similar with the expensive rents and some decent restaurants. That is If you want to compare prices of rent and neighborhood between Wicker Park and Pearl disctrict. Personally, they are both very expensive areas to live.

I believe your best bet will be the Alberta arts district. That area is going through some gentrification and it has many places to eat. Other areas that are similar are Hawthorne and sellwood too. There's this real good vegan shop in or near Hawthorn, I believe (flat fish?) that I highly recommend.

As like you, my wife and can't wait to move there. We'll be staying in Milwaukie until we settle in our permanent home.

cheers!

I think you would enjoy N/NE Portland and SE Portland neighborhoods based on your list. We have quite a few vegan/vegetarian restaurants and it is a popular lifestyle choice in the NW, so that won't be a problem. Generally speaking, the further away from Downtown, the more affordable, but good deals can be found if you look around just about any neighborhood (the Pearl is expensive, as is NW Nob Hill and Downtown). Stay as close in to town as you can for easy commutes on public transport and to be connected to the arts/music scene. There are some good art scenes in the Pearl, East Portland neighborhoods and NE Alberta, but you will not be far from art and music in any neighborhood. Visit Trimet.org to view maps of public transit, and compare them to the neighborhood areas you are considering. Post back here after you pin it down if you have questions.

Here are some neighborhoods you might want to check:
Southeast:
Hawthorne
Belmont
Clinton St area
Mt Tabor
Sunnyside
Brooklyn
Woodstock

North/Northeast:
Boise/Eliot
Mississippi Ave area
Alberta Street area
Piedmont
Arbor Lodge
St Johns

I had the best cheesesteak sangwich the other day.If you haven't had one of these gustatory marvels, I suggest you consult your physician and then ignore his or her cautions and go get one. Your mouth will thank you, or would if it weren't so busy. My recommendation: Steaks Fifth Avenue at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Easily located, just follow the sound of collective “omnomnomz” forming a nimbus around the cart. While you're gnawing on the first of two (or is that just me?), take a look around.…See More
