Possible move... need jiu jitsu, hospital, farmers markets, LGBT friendly, animal friendly.., ideas?

Hello everyone,

I am looking into a few areas around the US to move.  I hail from Chicago, but have been living in (**shudder**) Jacksonville Florida for the past 8 years, all of which have been almost completely miserable (no culture, not very animal friendly, no vegetarian restaurants...).

Anyway, here are some of the things I am looking for and questions that I have.  If I could get some divine insight I would be most grateful.

So I read that Portland was pretty progressive when it came to animal and the environment.  I have four larger dogs of my own so I would like a house with a yard (the bigger the better). LGBT friendly would be fantastic...

I am a huge farmers market person, and I would love to be close to one as I am a raw foodie and would probably be there everyday of the week.

IF anyone knows of any neighborhoods that encompass those qualities, can you please shoot me some info? I have tried internets searches, and the only info I have found was pretty vague and generalized.

Lastly, and this is a big one... can anyone give me an idea of what the weather is REALLY like?  I hear stuff from soooo many people that do not even live there. I would like to know the real story.  IS it really as overcast all the time, as people say it is?

Thanks in advance for your time...

Namaste!
Gabby

Portland sounds perfect for you! As for the weather- we have beautiful, sunny summers (July-September) and crisp falls with some foliage colors. We have less rainfall than most eastern seaboard cities, howeverour rainy season is more spread out. It is likely to have rain anytime between Oct-Jun. There are sometimes gray stretches for several days in a row.... but, I would not say it is all the time. I moved here from Ca about 20 years ago and handle it fine.

There are so many neighborhoods that you would like! If you stay withhin about 60 blocks of the center it is very progressive, LGBT friendly, etc. Depending on your budget, you may need to go farther to get a big enough yard for your pups. Let me know if you want more specifics. Bonnie
Yes, I think you will fit the lifestyle of Portland perfectly. As Bonnie mentions, the closer into town you can afford and find a home with a yard, the happier you are likely to be. We have farmers markets in several Portland neighborhoods with more springing up all the time. It is very dog friendly. The weather is indeed drizzly and overcast for many solid months during the winter. But, it is still pretty, and we don't get the cold and snow of Chicago, so other than the occasional storm, you won't have to deal with icy snowy road conditions very often. Most people who trade from the Midwest winters gladly embrace a Portland winter, which while tedious is mild in comparison.

I had the best cheesesteak sangwich the other day.If you haven't had one of these gustatory marvels, I suggest you consult your physician and then ignore his or her cautions and go get one. Your mouth will thank you, or would if it weren't so busy. My recommendation: Steaks Fifth Avenue at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Easily located, just follow the sound of collective “omnomnomz” forming a nimbus around the cart. While you're gnawing on the first of two (or is that just me?), take a look around.…See More
