Welcome to YOUR Portland Neighborhood Community

Hey all!

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Sara, and I recently moved to Tigard all the way from Upstate New York. It was quite a journey and an expensive one at that. My boyfriend and I drove across the country in a Uhaul and boy does the gas mileage SUCK in those beasts (We didn't get over 10 mpg the entire way).

Anyway, I'm not much of a lone-adventurer so exploring the city is a tad intimidating. I write this seeking some insight into the area. I come from a small town and big city life is quite a change for me. To get down to it, I'm an artist ie. I do drawings, paintings and the like. I don't know where to begin to get my foot in the door in the art community here. I'm shy by nature and making cold calls scares the crap out of me (haha). I just need some information so I know generally which direction to give myself a kick in the arse toward.
  • Are there any studios or galleries that I should look into and what do they offer?
  • Are there any parks where artists gather with easels to paint and chat with other artists?

  • What sort of job opportunities are there for artist-types in the city?

  • Are there any sewing shops, not so much tailors, but more like apparel manufacturing where they would require seamstresses?

  • Are there any shops that make decorated apparel with embroidery, tackle twill, screen printing, or sublimation?
Thanks in advance for any questions you can answer and advice you can send my way!

-Sara

Well, I would suggest you look into a couple different areas. There are artists all over town, so once you get out there are start to make connections things should get easier. First up, start attending the Pearl District First Thursdays and Alberta Arts District Last Thursdays, and the Central East Side First Fridays events. These are primarily mainstream Portland galleries, but you will be able to meet people and perhaps ask more questions about getting plugged into the arts scene.
You might also join the Portland Art Museum and begin attending events. Check the Regional Arts and Culture Council as well. We have several arts programs at local colleges and schools, so enrolling in a course or two would be a great way to meet people and make some connections.
Go to Yahoo Meetups and search the Portland area for art and related meetup groups. Here is just one, there are several: http://www.meetup.com/Sketchbook-Meetup/
Here is a Portland group for people who like to meet and sew socially.
These are good ways to get out and sketch, paint, and meet other new friends with common interests.
Portland is chock full of creative types who sew and make apparel and other handmade crafts. Stroll up and down some of our main East Side Streets and you will find shops selling handcrafted wares. Ask questions and perhaps someone can refer you to someone who might be looking for seamstresses. I would start on Alberta Street, Mississippi Avenue, Hawthorne, and perhaps NW 23rd Ave and the Pearl District (both on the West side of the river).

Also check our amazing craft fairs where you can make and sell your own designs, like Crafty Wonderland.

I hope this helps get you started, and welcome to Portland!
I also forgot to mention Art Spark: monthly mingling of Portland artists and a good place to network and meet people. Here is their next Art Spark event: http://community.portlandneighborhood.com/events/portland-art-spark...

I had the best cheesesteak sangwich the other day.If you haven't had one of these gustatory marvels, I suggest you consult your physician and then ignore his or her cautions and go get one. Your mouth will thank you, or would if it weren't so busy. My recommendation: Steaks Fifth Avenue at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Easily located, just follow the sound of collective “omnomnomz” forming a nimbus around the cart. While you're gnawing on the first of two (or is that just me?), take a look around.…See More
