Hey everyone that is taking the time to read this. First off, thanks.
We are wanting to move to Portland for August 1, 2009. Hawthorne area preferably, but we cant seem to find any stand alone houses for rent in the area. Everything we find online seems to be building complexes and that is just not what we are looking for.
We would like to get rid of the car and live by public transportation and bicycles so if you can help us find a house for rent in the Hawthorne area that is walking distance to most conveniences, we would surely appreciate it.
Have you checked Craigslist? This really does seem to be the best source of rentals. Belmont runs alongside Hawthorne as another option. Its a quick bike ride to get from one to the other as a point of reference.
thanks for the craigslist suggestions. I've been looking there but everything I find for rent is apartment complexes. I'm really trying to find a house for rent.
My experience with craigslist was not good, I'd be very careful. I was moving into one house where the "owner" was moving out for a job in another city. A friend checked the records online and found out the person who said he owned the house didn't at all, he was being evicted. Thank goodness for my friend checking and that this person didn't get any of my money!
I'm stuck in for FL now but I want to get back to the Northwest so bad. I miss the more progressive vibe, mountains, douglas fir, and beaches with rocks, mountains, tide pools, and waves. There just isn't anything like Powell's Books here either!
There are some rental agencies here that I know people have used and I actually need to find out who they are, too, since we are going to try and sell our condo and rent a house in the school district we want our son to go to school in. I'll let you know once I find out who it is.

Hi Lindsay,
I moved out from Ohio to the Pacific Northwest in 1975 and have been a resident of Portland since 1985, on and off. I just love this city. There are so many great neighborhoods both close in and on the outlying areas. If you have not liv…
Hi Samantha,
A great close in spot for large yards is Garden Home. It is really close to Multnomah Village, not far from downtown and has jr. acre parcels with decent homes for about $500K. A great school program near there is http://www.odysseyprog…
