Welcome to YOUR Portland Neighborhood Community

Wow, I thought I was novel for searching out a Portland forum to do some inside research on a possible move but I'm noticing i'm so not since quite a few posts are about moving to Portland.  I scrolled through as to not be redundant but didn't find anything on gay families in Portland?  Best cities?  Good schools?  And to be more specific personal trainer jobs???  Any ideas? My partner and I have a toddler and I'm from the pacific northwest (seattle) and dying to get back.  We live in California now and we're ready for a change.  I'm just concerned that we're not going to find jobs.  Any advice?

Thanks!

Hi Brandy. The job market is tough right now, so you're wise to search for jobs before planning the big move. Best cities? Portland. :-) What are you looking for specifically regarding gay families in Portland? (I don't think that would be a problem at all in most neighborhoods.) If you're in search of the best schools in Portland, try our Portland Schools page which has a search tool that lets you see rankings of schools in the area, and includes links to additional research. http://www.portlandneighborhood.com/portland-oregon-schools.html

Some great elementary schools include Alameda, Sabin, Irvington, King (all in NE Portland), but there are many others.

Since you are a personal trainer, you may be able to be self employed once you get going and establish a client base. There are lots of gyms and fitness places in town (Portland Fitness page lists several), and we have a fairly healthy living style for the most part, so I think you could find work in this field in Portland, but I would definitely feel things out on job opportunities before moving, as we do have lots of unemployed folks right now (just like many other areas of the country). Good luck!

I just noticed your post and want to let you know that there are tons of gay families in Portland. I am gay and have a daughter. I am also a Realtor and have helped many gay families relocate to town. As Lorri said, jobs are the toughest part. You might add the Jewish Community Center to your job search. As for schools, there are many great elementary schools in town. The ones Lorri mentioned among them. You might especially like Sunnyside Environmental (5-8) or Buckman (art magnet K-5) as they have many gay families. Best of luck and post any more questions you have! Bonnie

Bonnie. I was so glad to see your post. I'm gay and me and my partner want to move to Portland as well. We would like to see if we could maybe talk to you about neighborhoods, etc. as well. We will be coming out in October for a three day visit. So, we have a little time to research some more.

Drop me a line if you want...... drg_gen@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Damon
