Welcome to YOUR Portland Neighborhood Community

We're really thinking of putting down roots for our next move. We are late 30-somethings with a nearly 2 year old and live in Baltimore city right now. Can anyone offer some advice on some great areas to live in Portland that are family-friendly, have things to do close-by and relatively reasonably-priced? We currently live in a rowhouse and aren't willing to share walls again.

How about the overall feel of the city/burbs? Crime? Schools?

I know everyone asks about the weather, and we get tons of sun on the east coast, but if we're sun people... would we be ok in Portland. The temps looks great year round to us seeing as we're either frying or freezing out here.

Thanks, everyone!

If you're sun people, you may find the long winters a bit dreary, but given the mild climate, most people adapt (it's better than snow!), and besides you can easily take weekend trips to the Oregon high desert or Bend and get your sun fix. I think you would like family friendly neighborhoods like Mt. Tabor, North Tabor, Laurelhurst, and close-in SE and SW neighborhoods: Sellwood, Multnomah, and Hillsdale are just a few more that spring to mind. Portland is literally full of wonderful neighborhoods - and nearly all of them offer independent businesses, restaurants and coffee shops, parks, libraries, and other community features.
Thank you so much! :)
We moved to Portland from New York a week ago and *love* it. For family-friendly neighborhoods, it's hard to beat Sellwood-Westmoreland. We found a place in Westmoreland and it seems everyone has a kid and a dog -- or several (of each). It's really a walkable area and there are lots of parks and playgrounds. We've heard winters can be tough, but honestly, we're just glad to have sold our snow-blowers.
Awesome! Thanks for the information. I may be visiting a friend in Salem in several months, so I'm eager to check Portland out and the neighborhoods everyone has mentioned. Thanks again.
Hi Kelly!

Portland is a great place to put down roots!

I would have to agree with Lorri when she explains that Portland neighborhoods are full of independent businesses, restaurants and coffee shops, parks etc etc.

Also, there are great city communities and burbs communities. It would take a little more conversation to determine what school and neighborhood are right for your family. As a Realtor, that is my specialty. Are you interested in receiving daily or weekly listing reports via email? If so just provide me with and email and pricing stipulations and I can get that rolling for you.

Otherwise, I am here to help answer any questions you might have so ask away!

Thank you,
Drea Cooper

I had the best cheesesteak sangwich the other day.If you haven't had one of these gustatory marvels, I suggest you consult your physician and then ignore his or her cautions and go get one. Your mouth will thank you, or would if it weren't so busy. My recommendation: Steaks Fifth Avenue at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Easily located, just follow the sound of collective “omnomnomz” forming a nimbus around the cart. While you're gnawing on the first of two (or is that just me?), take a look around.…See More
