Jeanne Atkins will speak about her time as Secretary of State and some of the challenges that face Oregonians with the upcoming redistricting in 2020.
March is Women’s History Month and Jeanne Atkins made history by successfully implementing the Oregon Motor Voter law, which automatically registers eligible residents to vote, a first in the nation. Jeanne Atkins was the fourth female Secretary of State and the tenth Secretary of State who was appointed to this role. When appointed, she announced that she would not seek to be elected to the position, but would finish out the term.
Before becoming Secretary of State, Jeanne Atkins was the State Director for Senator Jeff Merkley. Before moving into politics, her work had been focused on women’s issues. She ran the Women’s and Reproductive Health division of the Oregon Department of Human Services for six years. She earned her law degree from the University of Oregon.
Light refreshments will be served.
