Afternoon showcase performances from three exciting Portland-based Choreographers. BodyVox is pleased to open its doors to a group of international dance presenters who will visit Portland for several days. For this special occasion, three very exciting and brilliantly diverse Portland choreographers will share a program of both finished dances and works in progress. Tahni Holt, Minh Tran, and skinner|kirk will offer a program together for the first time.
Tahni Holt’s creative practice follows her curiosities by asking questions that demand rigorous specificity yet remain open to a terrain of inquiry – inviting rather than prescribing interpretation. Holt is fascinated with how audiences see what performers do onstage, and she is always trying to research the complexity of this relationship. Much of her work expresses aspects of cultural body, individual body, the projected body and the labored body.
Minh Tran & Company will present a glimpse into the working process of his newest work, Annicca / Impermanence (working title), a dance journey of Tran’s personal investigation with an aging parent. Tran works to transcend performance as a journey of coping with grief, celebration of life and ultimately accepting the inevitable of losing and letting go of someone we love. He and his collaborators will present the conceptual vision of the work: set design, videos projection, costumes, and original scores and an excerpt of movement.
skinner|kirk DANCE ENSEMBLE is a Portland-based dance company that has been guided since 1998 by the artistic vision of founders Eric Skinner and Daniel Kirk. For the Ensemble, Skinner and Kirk develop original choreographic projects firmly rooted in the classical but informed by decades performing with modern and contemporary choreographers. skinner|kirk DANCE ENSEMBLE's work serves to expand the range of aesthetic experiences for company dancers, collaborating artists, and audience members throughout the region. Since its founding, s|kDE has self-produced several full evenings of original dance, collaborating with musicians, filmmakers, composers, fashion designers, sculptors and performance artists. The company has been presented multiple times in Portland by BodyVox, and appeared in White Bird's 2009 Uncaged Series where they premiered a new commissioned work.
