Now in it's 14th year, the Portland Adult Soabox Derby is a chance for the Portland community to gather together and enjoy a day of local creativity in art, science and engineering. 42 teams work within a budget to create a gravity car that they will race down Mt. Tabor Park (an extinct volcano!) in Portland, Oregon on August 14th. The cars race in heats of 3, competing for speed, art, engineering, crowd pleaser awards and more. The course is 7/10 of a mile and speeds can exceed 50 mph. The fastest 21 cars advance on to the quarter finals. Over 5000 spectators of all ages come out to see the cars, watch the races and become a part of this side splitting spectacle. Its a perfect day for a picnic!

Admission to this event is free, and we have upwards of 75 volunteers to maintain spectator safety to make the day run smoothly. We are striving to keep it a grass roots and non-commercial community event. This means we encourage people to pack in and out their own refreshment and we do not allow vendors of any kind. Changes we are making this year will make the race safer and more fun for racers, volunteers and spectators. Your donation helps us pay for danger tape, channelizer road cones, cops, track security, traffc control, first aid, straw bales, interactive games for kids and much much more. Most importantly, lunch and dinner for all our hard-working volunteers. Contributing to this event will help our organization promote an annual kids soapbox derby starting in 2011.

I had the best cheesesteak sangwich the other day.If you haven't had one of these gustatory marvels, I suggest you consult your physician and then ignore his or her cautions and go get one. Your mouth will thank you, or would if it weren't so busy. My recommendation: Steaks Fifth Avenue at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Easily located, just follow the sound of collective “omnomnomz” forming a nimbus around the cart. While you're gnawing on the first of two (or is that just me?), take a look around.…See More
