AUGUST

Wed 11 5-7 p.m.

The Freak Mountain Ramblers present their sizeable loyal audience with a unique brew of Americana with twists of rockabilly, bluegrass, offbeat humor, and sensitivity. The Oregonian states that "Much of the band's music has the folkie-gone-electric feel that was the original idea behind the Grateful Dead. The Freak Mountain Ramblers are old pros - and sound like it. With a lineup including 3 members (bassist Dave Reisch, drummer Roger North, and fiddler Lex Browning) of the inimitable and notorious Holy Modal Rounders/Clamtones bands of the '70s and '80s, FMR has its roots in the underbelly of the alternative music scene that existed at that time." A single rotation through the lineup can start with an original slide guitar country blues from Jim Boyer, move to a tale of a non-stop talker at a neighborhood bar by Dave Reisch, on to a ripping guitar-led tune about the shady side of Southern small town culture from Lex Browning, then to an old-timey jug band sounding "Rich Gal, Poor Gal" number from Turtle Vandemarr. It's no wonder Freaks recent shows are packed with some of the most interesting music fans around.

Your mouth will thank you, or would if it weren't so busy. My recommendation: Steaks Fifth Avenue at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Easily located, just follow the sound of collective “omnomnomz” forming a nimbus around the cart. While you're gnawing on the first of two (or is that just me?), take a look around.…See More
