RSVP here. Join us Tuesday morning, 10/27, to enjoy coffee, tea and breakfast rolls while you hear an update from the field and see the impact of so many people’s generosity. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions to the Director of Programs, Jeffrey Shannon and find out what is next for a resilient Nepal.
It is approaching the six month mark since two major earthquakes – measuring 7.8 and 7.3 in magnitude – hit Nepal within 3 weeks of each other affecting more than 8 million people from its bustling capital to the lush, terraced hillsides of the country’s remote regions, the earthquakes reduced cities and rural communities to ruble. Thousands were killed or injured during the disaster and more than 500,000 homes were destroyed. Our team on the ground responded immediately. After conducting rapid assessments to learn what people needed most, we began delivering emergency supply kits just two days after the initial earthquake.
The rebuilding of communities, lives and supportive networks is a daunting task, as the earthquakes have rendered hill- and mountainsides, homes and infrastructure even more fragile and prone to follow-on disaster scenarios. Regular climatic events in Nepal include the annual monsoon which brings flooding into major river systems and landslides in the hills and mountains, causing significant loss of life, damage to vital infrastructure, agricultural land and property. Spend your morning with Mercy Corps to find out how families are recovering, communities are rebuilding, and how millions of people move forward after a natural disaster.
